Bea's Mother

You have to make them think you're dumber than you are. That's the only way to catch a good man.-- Bea's Mom[1]

Bea's Mom is portrayed as having been a mean spirited woman and a bad influence on Beatrice and Donut.[1] She was highly religious and had had plastic surgery. Carl describes her as having "...perfect, tight, face-lifted cheeks."[2]

Story

Book 2

When thinking about Donut maturing as a person, Carl thinks back to a Thanksgiving he spent with Bea at her parent's house. He had been asleep on the couch, Donut on his neck, and he overheard them talking in the kitchen. [1]

Bea’s mom had said, “You have to make them think you’re dumber than you are. That’s the only way to catch a good man. You can’t control the ones who are smarter than you. And you don’t want the dumb ones to know they’re the dumb ones. Once a man realizes he’s stupider than his mate, he gets mean. You’re lucky to have found Carl. I just wish he was a doctor or a lawyer." [1]

Bea goes on to agree with her mom, but also say that she loves Carl. The two of them continue on with another conversation that Carl is glad Donut didn't overhear. [1]
