Book 4 - The Gate of the Feral Gods
| Chapter | Summary |
|---|---|
Crawlers are welcomed to the fifth floor, and Carl, Donut, and Katia are in the air quadrant within their bubble. Donut chooses the Glass Cannon class. The group makes their way to Hump Town and meet up with Mordecai, who is a Skyfowl on this floor.
Elle's team is on a boat in the water quadrant. Carl goes through his achievements and boxes and gets Surefire, a toe ring, a new tattoo, and Pawna's Tears. Carl messages to ask who else is in their bubble and chats with Gwen. Skarn lets Carl use his telescope to look at the Wasteland, and says the reason the gnomes don't bomb Hump Town or the Bactrian village is because of what they have in their town halls.
The team sets out to find other crawlers in their quadrant and meet Firas and Louis, and Langley's team of car salesmen archers. They head through the desert toward the Bactrian town, fighting a Thorny Devil and a Gnomish Drop Bear before fleeing back to Hump Town.
Katia and Carl build the Royal Chariot. The gnomes bomb the Bactrian town. The recap episode shows highlights from the previous floor, including Miriam Dom and Prepotente strategically stacking debuffs on a boss, Quan Ch ruining their plan, and Ifechi's death at the hands of Lucia Mar, who reflected Florin's bullets.
The other crawlers meet up with Carl's team, Louis brining along a changeling prostitute named Juice Box. Mordecai gives Louis and Firas a rapid detox.
Carl, Donut, Katia, Louis, and Firas sneak into the town hall and discover that some of the Dromedarian guards are changelings. Carl and Donut enter the basement and find Wynnebeing held as collateral. Wynne says that that the changeling Henrik has been torturing him to get him to give flesh to Quetzalcoatlus. Crawlers in the subterranean quadrant appear at the boundary and kill Wynne, and Carl asks them to meet at the Desperado Club.
The team escapes. Mordecai tells Donut she can use her sunglasses to identify changelings. Carl receives a sponsorship from the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network, Donut from Veriluxx RealPet Companions, and Katia from the Squim Conglomerate. Carl meets with Morris and Bobby at the Desperado Club and they tell him about the Tomb of Anser.
Carl receives a neural enhancer from the Valtay Corporation and a Toraline Root Vegetable from the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network. Carl, Donut, and Katia prepare to fight the borough boss, Ruckus.
The team heads into the desert to fight Ruckus. Via his description, Carl learns about the Gate of the Feral Gods, which is said to be hidden in the tomb. They defeat Ruckus and a notification announces that the water quadrant has been liberated by Chris.
Carl and Imani discuss Chris' change in personality since choosing the igneous race. Carl and Donut talk to Henrik, who explains how the collateral works. The tomb starts to fill with water. Carl brings NPCs into their personal space to take shelter, and Juice Box asks if he can help her get to the Hunting Grounds.
Carl and the team head out to execute their plan. Carl, Donut, Firas, Louis, Katia (hidden), Henrik, and a reanimated Wynne meet the Gnome Negotiator, Leon, claiming that Wynne is in need of healing. Donut offers to heal Wynne in exchange for passage onto the Wasteland. Leon says they can only take Wynne, Donut, and Carl.
Carl, Donut, and Katia (now transformed to look like Wynne after the reanimation spell ended) board the Vahana and are able to hijack it mid-flight with the help of Langley's team on the ground. Carl manages to shoot the bombs carried by the Wasteland before they can bomb Hump Town, then he, Donut, and Katia jump out of their balloon. The Wasteland breaks apart and crashes down, but the castle itself remains aloft.
The AI gets upset with Carl for not stomping on the frenzied gerbil enemies and he is forced to appease the AI. Carl receives the Coffee Shop Author Kit and Donut receives a robot toy version of herself, which Mongo destroys. Chris approaches Carl.
Chris is acting strange. Katia receives an emergency benefactor box from Princess Formidable. Carl realizes that Chris' body has been taken over by Maggie My, who is an Infiltrator. Katia shoots Chris-Maggie with a petrifying bolt from the emergency box and the team tries to figure out how they can save Chris. Maggie is sponsored by Prince Maestro and Crown Prince Stalwart. Donut uses the Hole spell to trap Chris-Maggie underground between quadrants.
Juice Box tells Carl that the changelings want to give Quetzalcoatlus a body so they can touch her, adding her to the forms they can turn into. Many of their kind are afflicted by the compression sickness, and they believe Quetzalcoatlus has a spell that can help them. She also says that the Gate of the Feral Gods consists of three components: one held by Henrik, one by the gnome Commandant, and one by the Mad Mage, and explains how it works. Katia tells Carl that she was unable to have children as a human and had hoped to adopt. Carl and Donut fly one of the gnome planes up to the floating castle and the Commandant's daughter greets them, saying that her father is already dead.
Bonnie brings Carl and Donut inside, where they find Commandant Kane, who was killed by Denise. Carl and Donut defeat Denise and liberate the air quadrant as the floating house descends to the ground.
The team regroups and Carl and Donut watch the recap episode and interact with the latest Veriluxx RealPet Companion. Juice Box and the Dromedarians take Bonnie in.
Carl rushes to the sapper's table before he and Donut are pulled out by Loita to appear in a Veriluxx infomercial. Carl antagonizes Loita, who goes on a rant about humanity being a blight on the Bloom. Carl leaves Robot Donut with Loita as he and Donut do the commercial. Robot Donut blows up, killing Loita.
Carl and Donut are teleported to the Desperado Club, where they meet Orren, a Syndicate liaison. Since he is unable to prove that they killed Loita on purpose, he is forced to let them go. They realize they have been away from the dungeon for five days, during which Katia held down the fort.
Carl and Donut get up to speed and join Katia and Gwen to initiate their plan to liberate the land quadrant. Gwen wants to go with an easier plan, but Carl pushes for Katia's more complicated one that will let them get the winding box from the Mad Mage.
Carl, Donut, and Katia enter the Sandcastle of the Mad Dune Mage and encounter a frozen statue of Lika in a fountain, which Mongo accidentally shatters. They find Ghazi, and his description reveals that he was trying to use the gate to summon Yarilo and get her to make Lika fall in love with him, but instead summoned Psamathe who trapped him in this castle. The group is attacked by a sand ooze, and Carl knocks Ghazi out and takes the winding box. Ghazi wakes and explains that Psamathe tricked him into marrying the ooze instead of Lika, and the real Lika is the soul-possessed sex doll in the fountain.
Carl, Donut, and Katia defeat the sand ooze boss, and the walls start to collapse. Katia escapes with Ghazi (and then kills him, taking his notes explaining how to use the gate) but Carl and Donut are trapped by the sand. Gwen and Tran open a valve and flood the tomb, sending Carl and Donut into the water quadrant. Donut freaks out.
Carl and Donut escape from concierge sharks and reach the surface, then head for the nearest town. Katia says that the gate can open a portal to the city of Larracos on the ninth floor, but Mordecai reminds them that crawlers can't teleport to other floors.
Carl discovers that the Lika sex doll head he took from Ghazi's castle has un-crystallized and is a withering spirit, possessed by half of the soul of Psamathe ("Samantha"), whose attempt to escape the Nothing led to her current predicament. They decide to hire her as a trainer and keep her in the saferoom. Katia uses Ghazi's notes to make a map of the ninth floor. Mordecai explains how the sixth and ninth floors work.
The team joins up with two new crawlers, Britney and Vadim. Katia tells Carl that pregnant women can't enter the dungeon, and women within the dungeon can't get pregnant. Carl leads a group to the water quadrant to turn off the pump in the submarine there, which is filling the Necropolis of Anser. Louis and Firas drop chum bombs as Carl, Katia, Tran, and Vadim dive underwater. Katia keeps watch as the other three enter the sub, where they encounter Quetzalcoatlus.
Katia flees into the submarine after seeing a sharktopus. Carl realizes that Henrik's body is in the submarine and loots his component of the gate, as well as a note that says Quetzalcoatlus can be killed by electric shock. He communicates a plan to Gwen. A boss battle begins as the sharktopus attacks, partially swallowing the sub, and Kevin and Magnificent Troy give live commentary.
Vadim runs away. Carl, Katia, and Tran manage to kill Lusca and her babies. Vadim tries to use an escape pod and dies. Carl uses the gate to transport himself, Katia, and Tran back to town, releasing a feral god.
Everyone shelters in the saferoom. Carl gets 7 "Fight the Power!" Achievements and accompanying stock certificates and photos of the mothers of all the plaintiffs. He also receives the Enchanted Anarchist's Battle Rattle and Drakea's Enchanted Kerchief of Disorder. Elle informs Carl that her team popped their bubble and Emberus appeared outside, wreaking havoc and searching for Orthrus.
Orthrus is inside the bubble with Carl's team, and everyone within receives the Where the Red God Glows quest. Morris and Low Thi distract Quetzalcoatlus and connect the electric panel in the tomb, successfully liberating their quadrant and popping the bubble but dying in the process. Maggie My escapes her containment, and Donut tries to keep Orthrus alive.
Gwen and Tran turn the drain back on in the necropolis. Carl and Donut fly a plane and use the Meat Hooks spell to lead Orthrus out of danger. They receive a new quest to lead Orthrus to Emberus, but a conflicting quest is announced which will reward crawlers for killing Orthrus, and Quan Ch attacks the puppy.
Carl and Donut fight Quan Ch. As their plane is crashing and Quan is about to kill Carl, Carl worships Emberus and throws a celestial grenade, summoning Emberus to his location and making himself temporarily invulnerable. Emberus and Orthrus reunite and disappear. Quan escapes, but only after Carl cuts his arm off.
Carl is now an acolyte of Emberus, which comes with various rules and benefits, including access to Club Vanquisher, and two quests: Find Out Who Killed My Son, and Kill Hellik. Carl and team have been using the Coffee Shop Author Kit in the personal space bathroom to communicate secretly. Elle and Imani lead the effort to help other crawlers in un-popped bubbles escape using the gate.
Once they have rescued all the crawlers they can, Carl and Donut travel back to their bubble and their allies start to head down the stairs. Carl openly discusses their plan to release a feral god onto the ninth floor before they descend. Katia tells Carl and Donut she wants to split up on the next floor to seek out and protect the former daughters from Eva. Louis and Firas take the changelings to Elle and Imani's bubble, where they open a portal and send the changelings to the sixth floor.
Carl, Donut, and Juice Box wait to initiate the final part of their plan while Katia heads to the water quadrant. A feral demon, Slit, comes looking for Samantha, so they let her out of the saferoom to fight. Samantha's mother is summoned and kills Slit. Maggie/Chris appears and Carl uses a Phase Lava Rock potion to pass through Chris' body and kill Maggie. Carl reveals that they are not actually sending a feral god to the ninth floor, and instead they use the gate to flood Larracos using the drain from the water quadrant, killing the NPCs and mercenaries and blocking access to the Desperado Club. Juice Box goes to Larracos as well, and before leaving says that she is in love with Louis. Carl pledges to kill every single hunter on the sixth floor, and everyone descends the stairs.
| Epilogue | Dr. Hu and an unnamed woman from the Open Intellect Pacifist Action Network discuss Carl's progress. Off-worlders Sadir and Gennrik search Earth's surface for Gravy Boat, a target on the Walk-On list. Bea is revealed to be alive on the surface, and Lexis takes her to safety before she can be hunted, on Odette's orders. |
