Borant System

“When I signed my indentureship contract, the Bloom represented less than 15% of the votes. Now they control the whole kua-tin system government. They’ve run it into the ground. The whole system is bankrupt." -- Mordecai[1]

The Borant System is a government and Syndicate System largely inhabited by Kua-Tin.

Description

The Borant System was formerly a democracy, republic, or other vote-based government with multiple political parties. In the last several hundred cycles, an ultranationalist party called the Bloom rose to power. The Bloom introduced a totalitarian regime and strict social hierarchy in which Party members enjoy special treatment within the System and Bloom-controlled companies (e.g. Borant Corporation), and non-Party members must toe the party line or risk violent retribution against themselves or their families. As of recently, all Kua-Tin must wear badges indicating whether or not they are members of the Bloom.[2]

The Bloom bankrupted the entire Borant System and went into the Valtay's debt. With the Valtay parked outside the Borant System and only "hours away from initiating a full-scale collection action," the Bloom pushed the Borant Corporation to start Dungeon Crawler World: Earth early and accelerate the crawl to collect its income.[2][3]

Story

SPOILERS FOR BOOK 3
With three days remaining on the Fourth Floor, Zev, who is not a party member, alludes to stirrings of unrest in her home system and increased prejudice against non-Party members.[4] At some point in the next thirty-six hours, Zev is sent to "a temporary re-education retreat so she may reflect upon her life and her personal philosophies" following a "personal tragedy."[5]

“I wish it was that simple,” Zev said. “Plus there’s more. Something happened back at home. A bunch of people… I really can’t talk about it. It’s difficult for those of us who aren’t party members. I’m holding on the best I can, guys."[6]

Speculation

  • As the Kua-Tin are aquatic, it follows that the Borant System consists mostly of ocean planets.
  • The Borant System does not appear to be one of the Syndicate's "more integrated" Center Systems.[7]
