“So you need Growler Gary,” he finally said, looking down at his own hand.[1]

Growler Gary is the gnoll bartender at the Downward Dog, a safe room bar at Station 75 on the Iron Tangle.

Description

Growler Gary is very concerned with being perceived as a coward. When the ghouls come through the station and kill everyone outside his bar, Gary tries to leave to help but is stopped due to his NPC key-holder status, making him effectively immortal. He is prejudiced against Hobgoblins.

Story

Book 3

While exploring Station 75, the Royal Court of Princess Donut first goes to the safe room in the bar "The Downward Dog". The bartender is passed out drunk on the bar. [2]

When they come out of their personal space, Gary is awake and trying to tell the crawlers what happened. The Festering Ghouls came and killed everyone. Gary tried to help but couldn't leave the bar. He mentions that woman came and killed him, stole his alcohol, but then he came back to life. Carl remembers a cookbook entry by Azin that mentions some NPCs are indestructible because they have something important on them. Drakea mentions they ran into a similar NPC but after a dungeon patch, they couldn't remove the NPC from the building they were in. Gary suggests they check out the Interdiction Auxillary Railway Repair Cart and the Interdiction Rapid-Response Railway Repair Cart for the End of the Line Rescue. [1]

Carl realizes he can use the portal on the front of the Interdiction Rapid-Response Railway Repair Cart to rescue all the crawlers at the Abyss Station who no longer have Train Conductor's Souvenir Hats. However to start the carts, a pair of left gnoll hands are required. Katia can't make a shape that works and Gary can't leve the bar. Additionally since the carts turn off if the hands are removed, the Royal Court need 14 left hands to start the carts. Since Gary comes back to life, Carl and Donut have Mongo kill Gary to regenerate the left hands. [1]

The first time Gary wakes up after being killed by Mongo, he's completely sober and doesn't remember who killed him. After that, he tries to fight back a few times, but eventually starts just hiding in a corner, whimpering. Carl apologizes, then explains that Gary deserves to know what they are doing. [1]

“And this is to get the people who killed my friends?”

“Yes.”[1]

Mongo kills him a total of 14 times. [1] On the last Recap Episode of the floor, the show uses a highly edited version of the events to make Carl look crazy and monstrous. It doesn't show the End of the Line Rescue or explain why they need the hands. [3]
