NPCs stands for "Non-Player Character." In the Dungeon, the term is applied to any named character whose actions are dictated by the production company or the System AI.
In the broader world of video games and tabletop RPGs, all NPCs are considered Mobs.
Manufactured NPCs
All NPCs are living, breathing, biological creatures. The majority of NPCs were engineered and printed by the production company (this season, that's the Borant Corporation), which means that the production company owns them. This type of NPC can only be used in Syndicate-monitored productions, and only for entertainment purposes. Since the company (in this case the Borant Corporation) created them, they own them. [1]
NPC minds are altered every time they are regenerated, so any memories from a previous crawl (such as a crawler talking to them) is erased. Memories will be implanted to give the NPCs a role in the story for the floor. The minds of "natural" citizens of the Syndicate are not allowed to be altered, but created biological ones are. [1]
Story
Some of the NPCs or mobs appear to have more awareness than others. Below are examples of this awareness.
Book 1
On the Second Floor a Laminak Rev Up Consultant shouts:
“Not fair,” the fairy screamed. The air crackled with her passage. She sounded desperate, on the verge of tears. “Not fair! We were going to move down to the third floor.” [2]
