Pathfinder Skill

“But most importantly, you'd have access to the Pathfinder skill. It'll make finding stairwells, shops, and guilds much easier.” -- Mordecai[1]

Pathfinder is a skill that "basically opens up the map in a very wide area,"[2] making it easier to find stairwells, shops, and guilds.[1]

Description

The Pathfinder Skill allows crawlers to "zoom out" their map to a wide area, most likely scaling with skill level, and notifies the crawler when they are near a safe room or stairwell. At Level 3, the crawler can see approximately 4X more of the map than someone without the skill (e.g. on the Fourth Floor, they can view 20 train cars instead of 5), but cannot see mobs.[3]

The Pathfinder Skill can only be trained by keeping the map open in full, obscuring the crawler's view; as a result, it is difficult to level up outside of a Training Guild.[3]

Story

Book 1

While interviewing Carl and Donut before Third Floor race and class selection, Odette encourages them to look for classes that include the Pathfinder Skill or another mapping ability to make it easier to find stairwells.[4]

Book 2

One of the AI recommended classes for Donut on the Third Floor is the Artist Alley Mogul Class. One of the benefits of the class is access to the Pathfinder Skill. While Donut does not pick this class as her permanent class, she does pick it as her class for the third floor as part of her Character Actor Skill for the third floor. She does not get the Pathfinder Skill. [1]

Katia Grim lists the Pathfinder Skill when describing her abilities to Carl, Donut, and Mordecai when she joins the party on the Third Floor. She specifically states that the skill "helps [her] find stairwells really easily."[5] She received the skill at Level 3.[3]
