Protective Shell is a rare protection spell that creates a stationary, temporary sphere around the caster's position at time of casting. Red-tagged corporeal mobs and physical attacks cannot move through the sphere.[1]
AI Description
Protective Shell
Picture yourself in high school. Now picture all the girls who would never get anywhere near you. It’s kind of like that, but on purpose.
Cost: This is an item-based spell. This spell does not require mana to cast. If you unequip the associated item, you will lose access to this spell. The cooldown will not reset.
Target: a 3-meter radius sphere centered around the right hand of caster + 50 centimeters of radius per level of Intelligence.
(Current radius: 4.5 meters)Duration: 5 seconds + 1 second per level of spell.
(Current Duration: 20 seconds.)
Requires 30-hour cooldown.A favorite of frontline tanks and castle guards, the expensive and rare Protective Shell spell shields the caster and anyone within the sphere from a mob’s physical presence or physical attacks. This spell does not protect against magic or against non-corporeal entities. Unlike the more popular Shield Spell, this spell does not move with you. This spell’s area of effect remains static once cast, unimpeded by your physical surroundings. So if you use this spell only when you really, really need it, you’re probably only delaying the inevitable by a few seconds.[2]
Description
When cast, Protective Shield appears as a transparent, glowing, semi-circle around the caster.[3] The spell's radius is not affected by solid objects, walls, or ceilings.[4] Red-tagged mobs inside the area of effect are launched "in every which direction" out of the affected area and are repelled backward if they try to enter the area, but white-tagged NPCs, other crawlers, and vehicles can move freely through the sphere.[5][6]
The shell does not move after it has been cast. If the caster exits the shell, they feel an odd pop in their ears.[3]
Story
Book 1
When Carl receives the Enchanted BigBoi Boxers on the Second Floor, he gains the ability to cast one level 15 Protective Shell spell every 30 hours. He immediately adds the spell to his Hotlist, and Mordecai mentions that the spell saved him more than once during his own crawl.[1]
Carl casts it for the fist time to stall the Rage Elemental; while its badger head is able to infiltrate the shield, the sharp tips of its claws cannot, and it is sent flying backward.[3]
Book 2
Carl uses the Protective Shell Spell to wedge a Mold Lion against a wall, trapping it. While it is trapped, he punches the lion, killing it. This breaks Tsarina Signet's Ink Marauder Spell casting as she had predicted the lion would win. [7]
Carl uses his Protective shell spell again against Heather the Bear. The parasitic worms that had been burrowing into Carl blasted off him.[8]
Book 3
- Carl casts Protective Shell on the Red Line train, letting the static spell smash all the monsters in the train. [4]
- When Donut is attacked in the Desperado Club, Carl instinctively gets ready to cast Protective Shell, but remembers that it wont work on fellow crawlers. [9]
- Carl uses Protective Shell in the fight against Gore-Gore when the latter grips his throat. Unfortunately due to the static nature of the spell, when Gore-Gore is tossed away, Carl comes with him. [10]
- Carl uses Protective Shell in front of the Nightmare Express, killing all the monsters on board including three Neighborhood bosses, earning him the Three Cheers for Slaughter Achievement. [6]
