Yolanda Martinez

When the apocalypse came for Yolanda, she didn’t once waver in her dedication to her patients. She was quick to laugh, quick to smile. And even though Yolanda Martinez was just as terrified as the rest of us, she stood her ground against a force she couldn’t possibly hold back.
She lived her entire life as a hero. She died as one, too.[2]

Yolanda Martinez was a crawler from Wenatchee, WA, and a member of the Meadow Lark party on the first and second floors. Her death had a profound impact on both Carl and Imani.

Description

Yolanda Martinez was a quiet, warm woman who had been a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for her entire adult life, and was working night shift at Meadow Lark Elder Care Facility before the transformation.[1][3] Her husband had owned a landscaping company, and she had worked 60 hour weeks for years to pay for her adult son's college tuition.[1] She and Imani were close friends who took care of the Meadow Lark residents together.[4][5]

Appearance

A "round Hispanic woman," Yolanda stood at a diminutive 4'11" tall and appeared to be around 50 years old. She wore medical scrubs with a plastic ID on her breast reading "Meadow Lark. Yolanda. CNA." She was equipped with a bow, and the quiver hanging on her shoulder was so big that it almost dragged on the floor.[3]

Story

Book 1

First Floor

Yolanda Martinez was level 5 when Carl and Donut encountered her and the rest of the Meadow Lark team.[3] They fight the Ball of Swine together, during which Yolanda is almost killed and is protected by Imani.[6] Although injured and caked in blood, the first thing she does after Imani administers a Health Potion is take out a cloth and clean Agatha's face.[7] She reaches level 6 after this fight and receives a new type of quiver in her Boss Box.[7][4]

Second Floor

On the second floor Yolanda, Brandon and Chris hunt Mind Horrors and kill a "Giant Blimp" neighbourhood boss thanks largely to Yolanda and her bow. She reaches level 9 after this action.[8]

When Borant Corporation changes the bathroom rules on the Second Floor, Yolanda and Brandon Andrews immediately worry about Jack and his habit of peeing in the hallways.[4] Later, Team Meadow Lark are on their way to the stairwell with the elders on a makeshift cart when Jack again pees in the hallway.[8] Although Donut reacts first, moving as though to kill Randall, Donut ultimately changes course and jumps away. In contrast, Yolanda does not hesitate: she kills Jack but is too late to prevent the summoning of a Rage Elemental. Randall is thrown from the cart and Yolanda stands over him trying to protect him. She fires two arrows at the Rage Elemental, but they shatter and do no damage. Yolanda and Randall are then attacked and killed instantly by the Rage Elemental. Her body "disintegrated in a red cloud of ribbon-like flesh."[1]

"Poor Yolanda. She was such a good kid." -- Elle McGibbons[1]

Carl's experience of the dungeon is significantly affected by Yolanda's death. When thinking about those he has lost, Yolanda's name is always featured. He describes feeling a great warmth from her like something he had always missed as a child. He sees in Yolanda the strong, caring and protective mother that he never had.[8]
